Speed Merchants
This edition focuses on the Victorian obsession with speed, and the impact of steam power on farming. After visiting the last steam-powered mill in the country, Adam experiences the legacy of Brunel's Great Western Railway, and sees if a project to build a steam-powered plane can ever get off the ground.

Playing God
Looks at science and medicine, including devices designed for waking the dead and the eccentric experimenter who reputedly created life.

Rule Makers
Hart-Davis finds out how the rules for sports such as tennis and football evolved, and discovers how standardisation in manufacturing made new inventions, such as the sewing machine, affordable.

Crime and Punishment
Focusing on the Victorian world of crime and retribution, he experiences life on the beat as an early policeman and looks at the forensic tests developed to catch poisoners. Plus the monotony of prison life, and early home security.

Social Progress
How the opportunities in employment and education created the middle classes and gave them such luxuries as their own toilets, frozen foods, and improved healthcare. The rich, meanwhile, could indulge in new gadgets such as the velocipede shower.

Conquerors 征服者
In this edition, he visits Kew Gardens to examine the plants which explorers brought back from abroad and experiences the science of storm prediction. Plus a demonstration of the greatest world-shrinking Victorian technology of all - submarine telegraphy.

Making It Big 夸大
The dramatic successes and failures of Victorian entrepreneurs, including William Armstrong, who installed a swing bridge in Newcastle, and Otis whose lift made the skyscraper possible.

Pleasure Seekers
Leisure, the seaside, weekends. They seem natural, but they were all Victorian inventions. The Victorians were freed from the fields and had cash in hand; they were the first mass pleasure seekers.

What The Tudors Did For Us《都鐸人的貢獻》

What The Tudors Did For Us
BBC TWO
Adam Hart-Davis
If you enjoyed the recent release of "What the Ancients Did For Us", you'll love to find out what Adam got up to "before he was famous". This is the first in a (hopefully) complete release of his full back catalogue, taking in the Tudors, Stuarts, Victorians, Romans and ultimately the beginning of it all, "Local Heroes".

The Good Lyfe
The Wars of the Roses concluded, Britain could finally afford to reap some of the rewards of civilization. In this programme we see the vast opulence of the most richest woman in Britian, Bess of Hardwicke, as well as the invention of tennis (originally played with kitchen sieves), horceracing, the theatre, and knitting. And of course what programme would be complete without an investigation of that perennial Hart-Davis obsession, the Water Closet.

War Machyne
Adam looks at the development of Tudor weapons of war, taking in unpleasant implements of torture, cryptography, and casts his own cannon out of pure iron and test fires it!

Seeyng the Worlde
Among many enduring Tudor inventions were the pencil, enabled by the discovery in Wales of what for the long time would be the only graphite pit in Britain, the telescope, perspective and oil paints, applied to create pictures of unprecedented realism using the camera obscura.

The Thinkynge Revolution
During this era there were the most striking transformations of our understanding of our place in the Universe. Adam explains how Tudor ides of astronomy were revolutionsed by the discovery of a "new star" or "nova" in 1572, and how the dubious practice of alchemy gradually gave place to chemistry, alongside the discovery of many new substances.

What The Ancients Did For Us《古代人的貢獻》

BBC What The Ancients Did For Us
BBC TWO
版 本:DVB
Adam Hart-Davis

The Britons
A lot of people still think that we were just woad-covered savages before the Romans came along. Well, we weren't - firstly we weren't covered in woad but dressed in a rather elegant new-fangled invention - trousers; more importantly we were organised, spiritual, technologically advanced Brits with European business connections all without towns and cities or being able to read and write!

This programme shows the evolution of the people of Britain from Stone Age hunters to Iron Age warriors. From early people who used animal bone picks to dig mines to a society skilled in the use of metallurgy, bronze, iron and gold. From a nomadic existence to a society organised into tribes with their own coinage and identities. From farmers using simple wooden ploughs to ferocious warriors driving thousands of chariots and repulsing the invading Roman army of Julius Caesar.
